Flag

The Union Flag (often called a Union Jack) is, obviously, the national flag of the United Kingdom, but did you know that in China this flag has the nickname “rice-character flag” because it resembles their character for rice (米)…?

What did this image teach me?

Beyond the Chinese nickname, I also discovered that the flag is only “officially” known as the Union Jack when it is flown at sea – as “jack” is a name for a national maritime flag flown at the head of the ship.

Also, it is often displayed upside down as people don’t tend to realise that it’s an asymmetrical design. Is the one above hanging the right way? You tell me!
