The King on Horseback
This is another great Romanian from history, his name is Carol I, the first King of Romania. During his reign, in the later part of the 19th century, he delivered Romania’s independence from the Ottoman Empire.

The Union Building
Built in that distinctive Art Deco style, this building started life in the early 1930s as a hotel. Nowadays it functions as an (admittedly cool looking) office block.

Golden Walls
If you stand in just the right place, at just the right time you can see these beautiful golden walls lit up by the early morning sun in the city of Bucharest. That should also translate as: I don’t know where I was, but it was very pleasant.

Bucharest 1459
As I explored the streets of Bucharest I came across several of these clocks. I’m not entirely sure if they exist for decorative purposes or if they’re supposed to be useable? You see, it definitely wasn’t almost half past four (morning or evening) when I took this photograph.

Spiru Haret
Continuing with our Romanian theme, here’s a picture of Spiru Haret (well, a picture of his statue near the university). Spiru (1851 – 1912) was a scientist and mathematician who revolutionised the education system in Romania by setting up schools for young children as well as adults.

Michael The Brave
This statue depicts one of Romania’s greatest heroes, the unifier Michael the Brave (or Mihai Pătrașcu as he was born). Turret Shadows
I liked the way the light and shadow worked on these turrets, and by converting it from colour to monochrome, I hope it has picked up something of a hand drawn, almost pencil on paper feel… that’s the plan anyway. This is my last shot of the turrets that sit on top of the church…

The Church of St Nicholas
It took four years to build this very intricate church in the heart of Bucharest, Romania. Work completed in 1909. The church was sanctified on November 25th. However, it took damage during the first world war, and was repaired again by 1921.
