Spiru Haret
Continuing with our Romanian theme, here’s a picture of Spiru Haret (well, a picture of his statue near the university). Spiru (1851 – 1912) was a scientist and mathematician who revolutionised the education system in Romania by setting up schools for young children as well as adults.

Old Reflections
This shot shows the first bank in Bucharest reflected in the windows of a nearby modern building. I liked the way the bank is carved up into different sections as each window reflects its image in a slightly different way. Old and new combined.

Abstract Abbey
Here’s an unusual shot of Glastonbury Abbey, looking straight up between some of the highest parts of the ruined abbey. I could go on at great length about Glastonbury Abbey and Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries, but to be honest many other people have written about it before me (and in far more eloquent…

The Old Silver Mine
This rickety structure still stands in Calico, an old, long-abandoned silver mine town in the Mojave desert. At the height of its mining days (which, admittedly, didn’t last too long) between 1883 – 1885, the town had over 500 mines and a population of 1,200 people. These days Calico is a tourist destination, involving gold-panning…
