The Golden Hind

Now, surely I don’t need to tell you the story of the Golden Hind? The first English ship to sail around the world in the late 16th century, under the guidance of one Sir Francis Drake? Ok, good.

Well, i can tell you that this particular golden hind is fixed to the front of the replica vessel, in Brixham, Devon.

What did this image teach me?

That Drake’s vessel was originally called Pelican, but he renamed it part way through his famous voyage around the world, to honour his patron whose family crest was a golden hind.
