Not quite a skull and cross bones, but definitely identifiable as a pirate flag nonetheless. This particular design is similar to (though not the same as) “Calico Jack” Rackham’s flag (a skull and crossed swords)…
What did this image teach me?
There’s quite a history to the pirate flag. Many pirates had their own variation on the “black flag”, with skulls, skeletons, swords, and bones – this particular flag is close to the “Jolly Roger” flag.
